The Washington Board of Massage continues to work on new massage therapy rule language. The rules writing process is open to the public, and the public is welcome to take part in helping the Board write rules. Draft rules language is available on the Board's Rules in Progress webpage.

The Washington Department of Health in conjunction with the Board of Massage is considering revisions to the state massage therapy rules. The revisions would increase the required educational hours for massage licensure from 500 to 625, and would also make changes to the continuing education rules and the rules regarding breast massage. As we noted in our April 2012 legislative update, Senate Bill 6103 amended Washington’s massage licensing statute by requiring that reflexologists who do not have a Washington State massage license must obtain a state reflexology certification (also referred to as a credential). The state has developed rules to implement the change, which can be read here.
House Bill 1981 was introduced in the Washington state legislature on March 7, 2013. The bill proposes to require that massage therapy businesses, or “establishments,” obtain establishment licenses from the Department of Health in order to operate.
