New Massage Therapy Rules in Washington State

Several new rules have gone into effect for Washington State massage therapists as of July 30, 2017. 

The rules impact multiple subject areas, as follows:

WAC 246-830-500 Equipment and Sanitation

WAC 246-830-510 Hygiene

WAC 246-830-550 Standards of Practice – Limitations

 WAC 246-830-555 Breast Massage

WAC 246-830-560 Coverage and Draping

WAC 246-830-656 Recordkeeping

WAC 246-830-570 Record Retention

Also, as discussed in our previous update, as of July 1, 2017, the state is now issuing all new licenses and renewals using the term "massage therapist." Active licenses using the term "massage practitioner" remain valid until they are renewed. Everyone who holds a license to practice massage in Washington may now use the title "licensed massage therapist" and the abbreviation "LMT."
