Researchers in Switzerland recently announced they have discovered a new muscle in the quadriceps femoris muscle group.
In dissecting and investigating 26 lower limbs in cadavers, researchers found the new muscle, named the tensor vastus intermedius, in all 26 dissections. The muscle lies between the vastus lateralis and the vastus intermedius.
While anatomical variations in humans are not uncommon, the discovery of an entirely new structure is unusual.
The article will be published in the March 2016 issue of Clinical Anatomy. In the meantime, read the abstract ahead of publication here.
