The Indiana State Board of Massage Therapy intends to hold a public hearing on the proposed rules (LSA Document #08-351 and LSA Document # 08-352) on November 14, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. in the Indiana Government Center South, Professional Licensing Agency, 402 West Washington Street Conference Room W064, Indianapolis, Indiana.

You may also submit written comments regarding the rule to: pla6@pla.IN.gov.

The proposed rules affect the application process, qualifications for state certification, additional definitions, standards of practice, and fees. Please note that the grandfathering provision is detailed in the law so it is not duplicated in the proposed rules. The board expects to begin accepting applications on January 1, 2009.

Until July 1, 2009, existing practitioners will be able to qualify for certification under the grandfathering requirements. An applicant would provide one of the following:

  • IRS income tax records from 2 consecutive years reflecting that the applicant has been a massage therapist; OR
  • Business records from 2 consecutive years reflecting that the applicant is a massage therapist; OR
  • Proof of completion of a 500 hour supervised classroom and hands on massage therapy program.
