The California Senate Business, Professions, and Economic Development Committee held an informational hearing on April 30, 2018. The hearing primarily addressed local government regulation, the school approval process, and human trafficking.

California Assembly Bill 3061, recently introduced in the state legislature, would specify that all owners of massage therapy establishments must register as a massage establishment owner with the county clerk in the county

For those of you who practice in Santa Cruz, we're happy to report that at its meeting on September 13, the Santa Cruz City Council decided to reconsider the proposed city ordinance regulating massage therapy.

The following information was emailed to our members in the Santa Cruz area on September 9, 2016:

As discussed in our most recent Legislative Update, California AB 2793, introduced this past legislative session, proposed prohibiting cities and counties from requiring Bowenwork practitioners to get local massage business licenses (as distinguished from a general business license required of all types of businesses). The bill failed in the state legislature this session and was not signed into law.

Under California law, cities and counties can enact local ordinances providing for the regulation of massage businesses. California AB 2793, introduced this legislative session, proposes that Bowenwork be specifically exempted from this provision. Thus, under the bill, a city or county could not require a Bowenwork to get a city or county massage business license (as distinguished from a general business license required of all types of busines

AB 1147 was signed into law by Governor Brown on September 18, 2014. The bill authorizes the continuation of statewide voluntary certification for massage therapists by the California Massage Therapy Council. In addition the bill does the following:

AB 1147 was amended on April 23, 2014 and will become the Sunset Committee bill moving forward. Legislation must pass this year in order to continue the statewide credentialing of massage therapists.
